The global commodity market witnessed a mixed trend on January 21, with crude oil futures experiencing a decline, while copper and zinc prices surged on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) through Upstox.

Crude Oil Futures Fall

Crude oil futures for February delivery fell by 1.2% to $69.45 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), as concerns over a potential recession and rising interest rates weighed on investor sentiment. The decline in crude oil prices was also attributed to a decrease in demand from major economies, including the United States and China.

Copper and Zinc Advance on MCX

However, copper prices on the MCX through Upstox gained 0.8% to $8,430 per tonne, driven by a surge in demand from the electronics and construction sectors. Zinc prices also rose 1.5% to $231.50 per kilogram, supported by a rebound in industrial production and a decline in global inventory levels.

Gold Prices Decline

Gold prices, on the other hand, declined by 0.5% to $1,840 per ounce, as the US dollar strengthened against major currencies and investors opted for riskier assets. The decline in gold prices was also attributed to a decrease in safe-haven demand, as investors became increasingly confident in the prospects of a global economic recovery.

What It Means for Investors

💬 The fluctuating commodity prices signal a shift in market sentiment, with investors becoming increasingly cautious about the prospects of a global economic downturn. As the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates, investors are likely to remain risk-averse, leading to a decline in demand for commodities and a subsequent decline in prices.
